Civil Rights: Police Misconduct
In 2007, the firm settled a lawsuit filed in state court on behalf of four clients who had been victimized in the crossfire of a shoot-out between law enforcement officers and the man who had taken our clients hostage. Prior to trial, the clients received a substantial (confidential) settlement.
In 2007, the firm filed a lawsuit in state court, as well as with the Industrial Commission of North Carolina, on behalf of a client who had been falsely arrested and injured by a North Carolina State Trooper. Our client was visiting Charlotte on business when she was arrested for allegedly leaving the scene of an accident and then failing to comply with a State Trooper’s commands. The case was settled favorably soon after the firm filed suit.
Corporate & Real Estate
In 2006, the firm handled the real estate closing for University Park Baptist Church's $11.5 million purchase of the Charlotte Merchandise Mart.
Defamation
In 2003, our client was awarded $450,000 by a Mecklenburg County jury following a defamation trial involving our client's former employer. The case was later settled confidentially before the case was appealed.
Employment
In 2007, our client received a significant (confidential) settlement for his FMLA (Family & Medical Leave Act) claim against his employer. The firm secured this settlement for our client after winning in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, which held that our client was prejudiced by not receiving notice of his FMLA rights from his employer.
In 2005, our client was awarded $420,000 by a federal jury after it found that his employer unlawfully retaliated against him for filing a discrimination claim. The case was ultimately settled confidentially before the court's ruling on attorneys' fees.
